Springsteen to play last concerts at Giants Stadium

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Bruce Springsteen will be playing the last concerts to be held at Giants Stadium before it is demolished. (The full article can be found at Rolling Stone.)

The choice of The Boss as the last artist to play Giants Stadium is fitting, if predictable. However, the interesting part of this article is that evidently Springsteen will be playing several full albums during these concerts. This seems to be a trend in rock concerts lately; I’ve remarked on it before.

The great thing about artists playing entire albums live is that for the fans at least, it’s a treat. Most fans will attend a lot of concerts by their favorite artists; playing whole albums gives the fans a chance to hear songs that they have heard played live infrequently at best.

Of course, that also is a problem. People attending the concert who are only casual fans, or who are attending with friends, are more likely to feel left out if it’s an album concert. A more standard “greatest hits” type concert will tend to be a better experience for people who aren’t big fans. I think that’s why I don’t really like the concept of album concerts; while they do cater to the fanbase, they don’t grow the fanbase at all.

However, with the iconic status of the albums that Bruce has chosen for these concerts, this should be less of a problem. An album like Born in the U.S.A. works much better for this concept, as the songs are going to be much more familiar to a wide range of people.

Dokken vs. Chicken

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Norton Internet Security has released a series of ads featuring Dokken. While not the best ads that I’ve ever seen, these are pretty good. They manage to communicate why you need antivirus software in a humorous manner, and most importantly, do so without demeaning Dokken or the members of the band. I had a good laugh out of these.

Dokken seems to be having a bit of a revival lately. I hope it continues; I’ve always liked their work.

Snubbed Again by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Friday, September 25th, 2009

For the second year since their eligibility, Bon Jovi has been snubbed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. (There’s more information at the LA Times.) One could argue that they are one of the most influential bands to have come out of the 80s. Many of the bands that Bon Jovi has influenced are just now coming into their own. Perhaps in a few years, once a few more of the bands that are proud to claim Bon Jovi as an influence and inspiration have really hit it big, Bon Jovi will be considered for eligibility. There are plenty of bands out there that certainly sound like they were influenced by Bon Jovi, like the Killers, Daughtry and the All-American Rejects.

I love the All-American Rejects. I’m still bummed that I bought tickets for the Prudential Center shows before the opening acts were announced and I ended up with Gretchen Wilson instead.

Alice Cooper isn’t in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame either, something which seems like a glaring oversight to me. After all, KISS is nominated this year. They were pioneers in a lot of respects, and certainly very deserving of a spot in the Hall, but they were also influenced by Alice Cooper’s work in a ton of ways. It just doesn’t seem fair to me that they should make it in before Alice Cooper does.

Jon Backs Out on Criminal Minds Appearance

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

By now, everybody knows that Jon backed out of a role as a serial killer on Criminal Minds. I think it’s unfortunate, because this could have been an excellent role for Jon to display his acting talents. I realize that this is probably because promotional schedule for The Circle isn’t going to allow Jon the time to film it. However, this was probably the only way I was ever going to bother watching Criminal Minds.

I went through my procedural-watching phase years ago. I watched the original CSI religiously up to the end of season 5. I watched on and off after that, but by the end of season 7, I was done. I basically quit watching when the writers started to run out of ideas and the crimes started getting completely ridiculous.

At this point, a crime drama has to really offer something new or interesting for me to bother tuning in. (In this case, Jon’s appearance would have done nicely.) Otherwise it’s Ace of Cakes time. And Rossdale doesn’t interest me that much.

Richie’s Story in Chicken Soup for the Soul Book

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Richie Sambora’s story is to be included into a new “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book focusing on musicians. (You can check out the press release at Reuters.)

Unfortunately it also includes stories from the likes of Kanye West, Christina Aguilera, Melissa Etheridge and Paul Anka, all of whom qualify as resounding disincentives to buy the book, at least in my world. I don’t like any of them, some to a greater degree than others. Etheridge in particular is one of the people whose work is part of the reason that I hated music during my teenage years.

Plus, these books are really expensive, especially if I only want one story out of the whole thing. The list price for them is $14.95. (You can get them for $10.17 if you buy ‘em from Amazon, but that’s still expensive when I only want one story out of the whole book.)

It’s also supposed to include stories from Mick Jones and Joan Jett, whose stories I probably wouldn’t mind reading, but aren’t anything that I would particularly seek out, either.

Sorry Richie, but I’d rather drop my $15 on a used Xbox game at the Gamestop.

Rock Star Vampires

Friday, September 18th, 2009

There’s a new movie called “Suck” coming out about a vampire band. I first heard about it listening to the satellite radio, but the DJ didn’t give much information on the movie itself. Actually, when I heard about it on the radio, I thought it sounded sort of lame.

I guess I figured that, like everybody else lately, they’d be doing the sensitive vampire thing, which I don’t care for. I prefer vampires to be tougher–if they were all whiny and sensitive, they’d have been completely wiped out centuries ago.

I suppose I should have known better–if they had Alice Cooper on board, it had to be decent. Now I’ve found an article from ABC News that lays out more details on the movie. This one, at least, doesn’t take itself anywhere near so seriously–it’s a comedy. And it has Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop, who both should bring plenty of authenticity to the rock elements of the movie.

It’ll be interesting to see if this makes it to the movie theaters around here. If it does, I’ll be looking forward to seeing it. Hopefully, if it was received well enough at the Toronto International Film Festival, it will get a run in the theaters.

We Weren’t Born to Follow Will Have a Real Solo

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

According to an interview with Richie Sambora at MusicRadar, the guitar solo in the album version of ‘We Weren’t Born to Follow’ has been replaced. Sounds like somebody was listening to the online reaction to the song. I certainly wasn’t the only one to notice the conspicuous absence of the solo.

The debate at the time of the release centered mostly on the fact that the radio edit made it painfully obvious that a solo was missing. Whether it was never there or had been brutally hacked out for the radio edit was the question. Now it appears that Jon’s yell of “Guitar!” was indeed meant to lead into a solo in the actual song.

What I find interesting is that the band has replaced the solo that no fans have even heard yet. The critiques that were out there up to this point, mine included, were critiques of the radio edit, because that was all that the fans had to go on.

I have to wonder what the original solo sounded like. Richie’s description in the interview made it sound like it didn’t live up to the “real rock album” sound that Jon promised for the record and that was why he went back and re-recorded it.

At least it sounds like they’re trying to deliver on that promise. If it means some last-minute edits, so be it. And if the band needs to push back the release date to deliver, then push back the release date. I’d rather wait a couple of months for a superior product than get an inferior album now.

More Def Leppard & Cheap Trick Tour Dates

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Def Leppard and Cheap Trick have announced that they are extending their tour. (The rest of the article is at Blabbermouth.net.)

So far the only tour dates that have been announced are on the West Coast. Hopefully they add more on the East Coast, because I missed all of the ones within easy driving distance the first time around because I had family or church stuff already scheduled. Honestly, my brother and my church have terrible timing when it comes to events. I missed Bret Michaels the last time he came through solo, for basically the same reasons.

(To make matters worse, it always seems like they have concerts here when I’m on vacation. It’s one thing to take a trip to Atlantic City for a concert at Boardwalk Hall. It’s another thing entirely to have to drive home from Atlantic City in the middle of my vacation for a concert.)

I’m looking forward to hearing more on this. It’s been awhile since I’ve gotten to go to a concert, though I may get to see Stryper in the next couple of weeks.

Guitar Hero 5: Hair Metal Strikes Back

Friday, September 11th, 2009

If you’ve been following the news about Guitar Hero 5, you know that all anyone can talk about is the fact that they made Kurt Cobain into a playable character. This leads to the inevitable: making him sing ‘You Give Love a Bad Name’. (The videos of it all seem to be getting removed; the one featured in the article at Blabbermouth.net got taken down. A search of Youtube should turn one up though.)

Dead people as playable characters is a tad bit creepy, as has been pointed out on other sites. That seems to be another trend; Cobain is in Guitar Hero 5, and all of the Beatles, alive and dead, are in the Beatles edition of Rock Band. That being said, Cobain is a lot creepier than the deceased Beatles. I think it’s because Cobain looked like a zombie when he was alive. Making him a playable character in a regular GH game, where he can be plopped into all sorts of random scenarios (like singing ‘You Give Love a Bad Name’) just makes the zombie comparison a natural.

The Beatles in Rock Band don’t seem to have the same ‘ick’ factor. Maybe it’s because I’m far fonder of the Beatles. But Harmonix was far more respectful of John, Paul, George and Ringo when they created their game. Placing the Rock Band versions of the Beatles into the detailed recreations of real venues or into the period-accurate “dreamscapes” while playing their own music prevents the disconnected ‘eww, zombie!’ reaction. The characters are always in a proper context, and it’s more like playing along with the Beatles than manipulating their corpses.

And yes, I may be forced to purchase the Beatles edition of Rock Band. My parents found out about it.

Bon Jovi Baseball Postseason Ad on TBS

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Yes, I know this has been out for some time. However, this post got saved as a draft instead of published, probably due to the janky touchpad on my laptop.

2009 TBS MLB Open- Bon Jovi from Turner Sports on Vimeo.

I’ve already weighed in on the song itself in earlier posts, so I won’t get back into it. ‘We Weren’t Born to Follow’ does make a good song for a baseball ad, though. Actually, that’s probably the one thing that this song is really ideal for–it’s a perfect sports song, even more so than ‘I Love This Town’. ‘I Love This Town’ doesn’t capture the competitive spirit of sports. ‘We Got It Goin’ On’ was a bit better for a sports anthem, but all told, still not as good as ‘We Weren’t Born to Follow’. I think we may be hearing this one in stadiums for a long time to come.

As for the commercial itself, I think Jon made a mistake changing his hair after the video for ‘Stand By Me’. Don’t get me wrong, the highlights do make a big difference in the look–it’s much better than that awful flat artificial brown that he had for so long. But for some reason he can’t seem to let it grow out, and I don’t get it. Longer hair is so much more flattering to his face.
