Review: ‘Garageland’ Live

The latest video posted on the official site is a performance of ‘Garageland’.

I didn’t really have any preformed opinions of this song. For some reason, this song never really stood out enough from the rest of the tracks on the box set for me to really take notice of it. (A quick check of the play counts on Windows Media Player reveals a total play count of 2 for this particular track.)

It’s mostly a good showcase for Jon’s voice. The verses here really gave him an opportunity to display some of the emotion that he can put into a song. I love the way that he builds up the performance to the chorus–and it’s a good one. This is the kind of performance that I love to see when I see the band live.

Richie’s best work in this video, in my opinion at least, is all during the verses. He’s actually really adding a lot to the feel of this track–his playing is really helping to set up the mood of the verses. Especially the first verse–he really shines during the beginning of that verse.

I was actually surprised by how much I liked this song now that I’ve heard it again. I’m not sure how I overlooked it when I was discovering the songs on the box set. I’ll have to go back and listen to the original a few times now. It might become a new favorite.
