Power Ballads and the Awful Truth

Okay, so today is true confessions time.  (Somehow, that’s what happens every time I start looking at the play counters in Windows Media Player.)  And this time I have to confess–I evidently don’t actually listen to power ballads as much as I think I do.

Out of the top 10 most played songs, exactly one–’This Ain’t a Love Song’–qualifies as a power ballad.  Stuff that I would have counted as an all-time favorite just a few years ago–songs like ‘Bed of Roses’–come in quite low on the list.   Part of the reason that I became such a big Bon Jovi fan was for all of the big power ballads made for singing along with in stadiums.

As far as I can tell, what happened is that my musical taste got even broader.  Sure, I still love those songs, and I seek them out regularly.  But I’ve also discovered a deep and abiding love for both hair metal and harder rock in general.  So all of those ballads that I think of so often–and that I love so much to review–are just plain outnumbered in my music collection.

Also, the ballads that I’ve been listening to have started to shift around.  Sure, the older songs have a head start, but over the last few months, I’ve really started listening to some of the more power ballad-esque songs from The Circle a lot.    Especially ‘Learn to Love’; from what I can see that one’s climbing the ranks fast.
