Random Song: The River

September 28th, 2011

Artist: Bruce Springsteen
Album: The River

I discovered Springsteen relatively late.  Sure, his work was always part of the background of my world–which, when you consider that I’ve spent a fair part of my life in New Jersey, shouldn’t be a surprise.

The ten songs that made me like music

September 26th, 2011

As you may know, I grew up during the heyday of grunge, but that style of music never spoke to me at all.  (Actually, I was so utterly alienated by grunge that I spent years unable to understand what it was that made people hardcore fans of any band.)  I picked up an album here and there over the years as a song caught my fancy, but it wasn’t until I bought that copy of Cross Road that everything started to come together for me to really become a fan of rock music.

Bon Jovi Lisbon Stream Review

September 21st, 2011

I almost missed this; I hadn’t been paying attention to the official site very much, and I cancelled my original plans for tonight because I was tired when I left work.  (If I hadn’t done that, I’d have been miles from my computer.)

Come Back (album track)

September 12th, 2011

One of the interesting things about doing album reviews and random song posts is the way that they force me to revisit songs and albums.  Especially this experiment in reviewing an album that I’ve actually had for years.   I’d forgotten–or maybe never really noticed–that the overall quality of the songs goes down later in the album.  All of the strong songs are right at the beginning.

Burning for Love (album track)

September 7th, 2011

Thankfully, this song, sounds a little bit less dated than the last one.  It’s still more a pop song than a true hard rock song.  In the later songs by the band, they’re usually better at balancing out their pop influences, but this is, after all, their first album, and that balance isn’t quite there yet.

Breakout (album track)

August 31st, 2011

Okay, I think I need to take back the comment that I made about this album not sounding too dated when I started this review.  (Obviously, I hadn’t really listened in this album in a long time. )  Because we’re right back to the 80′s cheese here.

Love Lies (album track)

August 29th, 2011

This makes two ballads in a row, now.   The problem with that is that these two kind of start to blend together, especially if you listen to them one right after each other.   Switching this song with a more straight rock track from elsewhere on the album would have worked better to help differentiate the two songs.
