EA Promotes Brutal Legend Right

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

As part of the marketing for Brutal Legend, EA is co-sponsoring a free metal concert, the Brutal Legend Metal Meltdown. (You can read more details at The Escapist.)

They’re bringing in a pretty good crew of musicians to perform at it, including GWAR. It’s hard to find a band that takes metal further to the extreme than GWAR does. It’s just one more thing that enhances the metal pedigree of the game. It’s also cool that they would actually go to the effort of getting a band this big for a promo gig.

They also timed it right, if they set it up to coincide with the beginning of Comic-Con. That should help raise the profile of the game with a large potential audience right there. Plus, the convention provides fertile ground for word-of-mouth marketing–if the concert is good, which looks likely to be the case, there could be a lot of good PR for the game.

Too bad it’s on the other side of the country from me. It sounds like a fun event.

Brutal Legend Gameplay Demo

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Check it out… there’s a Brutal Legend gameplay demo at Gamepro. This is the first time that I’ve really seen the game in action. Cutscenes and trailers don’t give you a handle on how a game will actually play. This however, confirms that the game will be as awesome as it looked before.

I don’t think I’m going to give away anything particularly spoiler-ish, but just in case, the rest of this post continues after the jump.

Brutal Legend Box Art

Friday, June 26th, 2009

(Or is it cover art?)

Destructoid has previews of the box art for Brutal Legend.

Like the commenters at Destructoid, I do find it interesting that Tim Schafer’s name is the only name on the box with the laundry list of heavy metal celebrities in the game, plus Jack Black in the lead. The absence of Jack Black’s name is especially odd; the guy has built a very successful career and the marketing materials that have been released for the game thus far have made fairly heavy use of it–especially the ‘Brutal Thoughts’ clips that they have been releasing.

Perhaps the list of heavy hitters was so long they wouldn’t fit on a standard game disc box at any kind of reasonable font size for marketing purposes. (Judging by the cast list that I’ve seen so far, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the case.)

Even without leveraging the game’s star power, the box art does a more than adequate job of selling the contents inside. Heck, if I saw that at the local Gamestop, I’d be zeroing in on it in a heartbeat even if I knew nothing whatsoever about the game. Guitars, amps, and some seriously metal weaponry. Also, between Eddie’s bloody axe and the assorted other weaponry on the cover, it’s amply clear that this is more than just a heavy metal Guitar Hero clone.

Looks like they did cut Dio

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Well, Destructioid confirmed that they cut Dio from Brutal Legend to appease Ozzy.  I’m not surprised, just disappointed.  I’m not sure how they can make a metal game and cut the Voice of Metal out of the game!

They should have cut Ozzy out before cutting Dio. Ozzy doesn’t seem to be interested in metal anymore, just making lame cell phone commercials.

Somebody needs to break it to Ozzy; BlackBerry phones aren’t metal. And the Samsung Jack commercial just makes me cringe.

All that being said, Tim Curry probably isn’t a bad choice to replace Dio, if they really felt that they had to. I don’t know about now, but he used to have a really good voice. (Speaking as a veteran attendee of midnight showings of Rocky Horror, that movie would not be what it is without him. I know it destroyed his career as a ‘serious actor’. But a legacy is a legacy, and that movie is going down in history as a classic.)

The fact that they compromised what was looking to be one of the coolest video games ever to appease Ozzy’s stupid feud is just lame.

E3 Is Here!

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

E3 started yesterday and has brought with it a whole lot of news….

You can check out the Brutal Legend press conference from E3 over at GameTrailers. It’s got a brand new trailer for the game in it, along with a new “Brutal Thoughts” clip. This is the first trailer to actually show Lionwhyte. He looks pretty cool and the scream is impressive, but Halford’s British accent doesn’t quite fit with the look. He does have some good lines though. Actually, it sounds like everybody does. The more trailers we get, the more the humor element of the game comes through, and it’s well done. And by the way, Keeper of the Sacred Beer Tree is pretty much everyone’s dream job. (At least for the people who will play this.)

Oddly enough, I haven’t seen any sign of Dio yet, although I had heard that he was going to be in Brutal Legend. I had thought that he was going to be the bass-playing mystic, but it looks like that’s going to be Lemmy’s character. It’s possible that I got my information on that from a bad source. However, the video does show a lot of the other characters from the game, including Halford’s other character. This was also the first time that I’d seen Lita Ford’s character, and the Ozzy announcement was new, even though I can’t say it’s a surprise. They’ve done such a good job getting talent for Brutal Legend that I’m not surprised by anyone showing up anymore. And at that rate, how could they have a metal game and leave Ozzy out?

I just hope that they didn’t cut Dio to appease Ozzy. I realize that the whole Heaven and Hell thing is causing some trouble between those two right now, but it’s not like they had to be in the studio together.

Unfortunately, it has also brought us the announcement of the Beatles edition of Rock Band. Now, if you read my earlier post about the Guitar Hero band games, you’ll have an idea of how thrilled I am about that. Honestly, I though Harmonix was better than that and wouldn’t follow Activision’s lead on this one, but I guess I was wrong. These band-based games just end up being monotonous. It would make much more sense to sell themed track packs–call them mega-packs or some other fancy name if they still need to make a big deal out of releasing a whole pile of tracks from one band–but integrate them with the existing games. That way, playing through a career for awhile doesn’t get so monotonous.

I realize that the band games do include different venues–and that’s fine, but how much value do the venues really add to the game? Once you’ve gotten to Hard or Expert it’s not like you can really pay attention to anything but the track anyway. And even at that, that’s solvable too. I’m sure that it must be possible to add downloadable venues to the games. Throw those in with the track pack and then it can be a sub-game. They could even give it its own achievements, like other expansion packs have on the 360. They can make just as much money, if not more, off downloadable content. I might have bought the Beatles tracks as downloads for Rock Band 2. I won’t be buying them as a separate game.

Brutal Legend Q&A tonight

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Just a reminder–the Brutal Legend Q&A over at Twitter is tonight.

There’s even a chance to win a guitar–autographed by Tenacious D–if you show up. Cool.

About that cutscene…

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

About that cutscene on Spike… I meant to watch it. I just crashed out on the couch and fell asleep before 11. Pathetic, but it was a long day at work–even with the shorter drive now that I’ve moved. I wish I’d seen it. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find it on YouTube or anywhere else. The only things that come up for Brutal Legend on Spike are the trailers from the VGAs. While those do rule, they aren’t exactly new.

(I think I’ve seen those about fifty times now. I can’t stop watching them. But I want to see Lionwhyte in full video. That will be too cool.)

I’m sure that there’s going to be new goodies coming out of E3 though, and when those come around, I’ll be on it. Hopefully those will make up for missing this.

(Update: Scratch that, I think I’ve found it at Kotaku.)

It looks like it’s Eddie’s introduction to the Halfords–basically a chunk of the standard intro cutscene that sets up the plot of the game. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a game that didn’t come with one of those. Closest might be Oblivion, where the exposition was worked into the tutorial level dialog instead of being a straight-up intro cutscene, and this looks like it might be sort of like that, because it has to have come after the first tutorial fights when Eddie first wakes up.

Brutal Legend Q&A with Tim Schafer

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

According to Kotaku, Tim Schafer will be doing a Q&A on Brutal Legend on the Brutal Legend Twitter account next Tuesday.

If I had a Twitter account, I think I’d ask if they intentionally made Lionwhyte look like Bowie. (I think he was meant to look like Dee Snider, but the makeup isn’t quite drag-queen enough.)

(Also, I’ll be checking up on that new Brutal Legend cutscene that’s supposed to air on Spike tonight at 11. I need to go look up what channel Spike is on here. Changing cable providers due to my move has caused all kinds of havoc in my channel surfing.)

I Have Seen Lionwhyte!

Monday, May 25th, 2009

I was reading up on Joystiq’s preview of Brutal Legend today. The article is packed full of new screenshots I hadn’t seen before, including one of Lionwhyte–the hair metal villain. He looks like Bowie crossed with Bret Michaels, and his wardrobe is very Jon Bon Jovi circa 1984. The end result is hot, in a rather villainous way.

Also, there’s a killer screenshot showing Eddie’s wings. I’d seen them in one of the trailers, but nothing to give a clear view of what they would look like or how they would be used in-game. It looks like you’ll be able to do aerial combat in the game. Also, the wings are totally metal.

I can’t stop smiling when I read about this game. It would have been worth it to have bought the xbox just for this.

Tenacious D Guitar in Brutal Legend

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

I noticed today that Gamestop is offering a code to unlock an in-game Tenacious D guitar as a preorder bonus on Brutal Legend.

Personally, I always got a bit of a kick out of Tenacious D. Adding The Metal to the Guitar Hero 3 track list was a good call. In a way, it kind of summed up what the whole Guitar Hero series was about–the ultimate triumph of rock over all comers. Let’s face it–we know that Guitar Hero already saved Brutal Legend. It has probably saved rock from dying slowly as pieces of its soul were sucked away into other genres–like country–to wither and die.

Sounds like time to run out to your local Gamestop and put in an order–if you haven’t already. October’s looking awfully far away.
