My Top 10 Non-Bon Jovi Songs

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

So, once again I present to you another Real Top 10 list.  These are compiled based totally on the play count in Windows Media Player on my computer–in other words, these are the songs that I actually listen to the most.  Not the songs that I say that I like the most, but what I really do like the most.  (Those two things aren’t always the same.)

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

I always wind up turning to music when I’ve had a bad day.   Sometimes it’s a concert DVD, and sometimes it’s just turning on the computer and letting Windows Media Player shuffle until it hits the right song.

So, I present the top 10 songs that I turn to when I’ve had that truly rotten day… (more…)

Random Song: Bringin’ On The Heartbreak

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Artist: Def Leppard
Album: High ‘N’ Dry

This is one of my all time favorite Def Leppard songs.  (I’d have a really hard time choosing between this one and ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’, but if I was pressed, I’d probably pick Sugar over this one, and that’s only because I really like the energy in that one.)

Random Song: Pour Some Sugar on Me

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Artist: Def Leppard
Album: Hysteria

This is a sleaze rock classic if there ever was one. Not only are the lyrics delightfully trashy, even the sound of the song is sleazy. And they mix it up perfectly with a big, arena-rock hook. This kind of in-your-face swagger is what finally truly got me interested in music.

And it sticks in your head. This is not a song that goes quietly out of your mind–but at least in my case, I never want it to. I sometimes wake up with a song stuck in my head–at least if it’s ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me’, it’s a good one. (Hey, it beats some of my brain’s other choices–”100 Years” or “Diamond As Big As The Ritz” tend to just drive me nuts.)

This might well be the ultimate arena-rock anthem. It’s not deep, but the lyrics of the song are rhythmically well chosen–the way the words fit together and flow is amazing. (I have to admit, I had to look up the words the first time.) But once you’ve got them, it’s fun to sing along with this one. This is one of the songs that I always keep on my car playlist.

There’s no pretense here. It’s just big and loud and fun, and I love it.

Random Song: Love Bites

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Artist: Def Leppard
Album:Hysteria

For those of us who aren’t the luckiest in love, there’s something about this song that just speaks to us. There’s something about the tight harmony, coupled with the incredible intensity in the vocals, that makes this one of the ultimate love gone wrong songs of all time.

This song also illustrates why Def Leppard has always had such great success in crossing over into the pop markets. The immediate accessibility of this song, coupled with the classic themes of this song, make it a natural crossover. Also, with its reliance on vocals rather than heavy guitars and drums, makes this song very radio-friendly.

Somehow, in spite of all of that I usually disdain ‘pop’ music, I really like this song. I think it’s because it brings in the amazing harmony that Def Leppard can do. I really respect the vocal talent that it takes to do that kind of vocals. Plus, the artistic restraint and finesse that they display by using the harmony to convey the intensity is amazing. Most other artists would just have screamed for the ceiling. Not these guys. And that shows what kind of musicians they are.

All told, for such a simple sounding song, I’ve always found hidden depths of craftsmanship in Love Bites, and that contributes to how much I like it.

Get a Guitar Autographed by Richie Sambora

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

The animal rescue group Precious Paws will be auctioning off a guitar signed by Richie Sambora. (There’s a full list of the items that they will be auctioning at Tonic.)

Unfortunately the article doesn’t say whether it is a guitar that Richie has actually used. I know the money is going to a good cause, but I’d want a guitar that Richie actually used. Especially at the kind of prices that these auctions bring in.

If the guitars start to get pricey, I guess I could always bid on the autographed beer can from Joe Elliott.

More Def Leppard & Cheap Trick Tour Dates

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Def Leppard and Cheap Trick have announced that they are extending their tour. (The rest of the article is at Blabbermouth.net.)

So far the only tour dates that have been announced are on the West Coast. Hopefully they add more on the East Coast, because I missed all of the ones within easy driving distance the first time around because I had family or church stuff already scheduled. Honestly, my brother and my church have terrible timing when it comes to events. I missed Bret Michaels the last time he came through solo, for basically the same reasons.

(To make matters worse, it always seems like they have concerts here when I’m on vacation. It’s one thing to take a trip to Atlantic City for a concert at Boardwalk Hall. It’s another thing entirely to have to drive home from Atlantic City in the middle of my vacation for a concert.)

I’m looking forward to hearing more on this. It’s been awhile since I’ve gotten to go to a concert, though I may get to see Stryper in the next couple of weeks.
