Rock of Ages on the Tonight Show, and other things

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

I did catch most of the Rock of Ages touring company performance on Monday’s Tonight Show. Note that I did say ‘most’. It was a long Monday, and I fell asleep on the couch before the end of the 11 o’clock news.

Rock of Ages on America’s Got Talent

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

I found a video of the cast performing on America’s Got Talent on Blabbermouth.net.

Maroulis’ performance on ‘I Wanna Rock’ was interesting. I’m very used to the original version, and Maroulis was actually bringing a more melodic sound to the performance rather than belting it out the way that Dee Snider did. He actually takes it and makes it into a real Broadway song, which is pretty cool. Plus, Dee Snider himself shows up halfway through the song.

‘Don’t Stop Believin’ came out much better as far as I’m concerned. The song actually lends itself amazingly well to an ensemble production. It comes out rather drastically different from the original recording, but once again they’ve taken it and made it perfect for use in a Broadway musical. Also, this song seemed to be better suited to Maroulis’ vocal style than ‘I Wanna Rock’. ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ really lets him shine.

Rock of Ages is touring!

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

An article on Constantine Maroulis from the Los Angeles Times confirmed my hope that there would be a touring production of ‘Rock of Ages’. (Of course, if I had been paying attention to the official site, I’d have noticed that there was going to be a tour a long time ago.)

I had wanted to see the Broadway production back in December when I went to New York City, but I got overruled, and I haven’t gotten to make a trip back since then. (That was, I’ll admit, a spur of the minute idea. We didn’t go to see the show–I just happened to notice that there were half-price tickets available at the booth in Times Square when we walked by.)

But at least there are a few venues in this area that run a lot of touring productions of musicals. It’s a lot easier to get to see a show when I don’t have to devote the better part of the day to riding a bus into Manhattan. If the touring production does stop at one of the theaters around here, it’ll be relatively easy for me to get in the car and just go.

Maroulis got a lot of praise for his stint in the Broadway production, and if he’s doing the touring production that means that it should be pretty good.

Fun article on Rock of Ages

Monday, April 5th, 2010

There’s a fun article on the rehearsals for the Canadian production of Rock of Ages on the National Post site. It doesn’t go into a lot of details, but it gives a neat little window into the kind of mindset that it takes to put on a show like “Rock of Ages”.

I still have to get around to actually seeing the stage production of ‘Rock of Ages”. I wanted to get last-minute seats for the evening performance the last time I was in New York, but I got overruled. (Everyone else wanted to have dinner at the Thai place on Restaurant Row and then head home.) And these days, I don’t get to make trips into Manhattan as often as I used to. These days I need to play way further in advance.

Well, at least when they get around to making the movie, I can watch it on DVD.

In Which All Roads Lead to New York City

Monday, December 14th, 2009

You may have noticed that I skipped a post on Friday. I apologize for that. I didn’t have time to get a prefabricated post scheduled for Friday, and I went to New York with my family for the day. I tried to get some Christmas shopping done, but didn’t really see anything that suited the bill for the presents still remaining on my list.

I did try to argue in favor of getting tickets for Rock of Ages when we passed through Times Square, but by that point everybody else was tired out and didn’t want to go to a show. (We’d already walked pretty far by that point.) We ended up eating Thai food for dinner and counting the taxis with signs for musicals with a Bon Jovi connection. Seriously, it’s like every other taxi in Manhattan has a sign for either Memphis or Rock of Ages on it.

It wasn’t until we were walking past the big tree in Rockefeller Center that I realized that I’d managed to miss Bon Jovi’s Saturday Night Live appearance by one day. If I’d been paying attention when we scheduled the trip, I could have pushed it to Saturday instead and tried for standby tickets for SNL. (I understand that you have to get there pretty early to get those, if they’re available, though. I’ve never tried.)

Besides, after actually watching it on Saturday, I’m actually glad that I didn’t manage to get tickets. The opening monologue was so boring that I managed to fall asleep on the couch about 30 seconds into it Granted, I was tired, but still. Falling asleep that early on a Saturday night is positively embarrassing. The good part about that was that I missed most of the actual sketches, and my finely honed Spidey Sense woke me up the minute Bon Jovi started playing.

While the opening monologue (and evidently the rest of it, according to my friends who did manage to stay awake) was evidently pretty bad, Jon and the boys did a good job. First, it’s good to hear a song from The Circle other than ‘We Weren’t Born to Follow’ getting some exercise. Also, ‘Superman Tonight’ is one of the better tracks on the CD. I think it’ll do the sales of the disc some good if they get some exposure for some of the other songs.

Try out for the Canadian production of ‘Rock of Ages’

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Open auditions are being held for the Toronto production of Rock of Ages. (The full story is available at Blabbermouth.net.)

If you’re in Canada and like to sing hair metal, this might be your chance to break into show business.

This also increases my hopes that a touring production of Rock of Ages will be formed in the United States. There’s a theater near me that runs a lot of touring shows, so I’ll finally get to see this live. While I know that there is going to be a Rock of Ages movie, movies are never the same as actually seeing a show first-hand. (Well, actually, I have the VHS of Cats, and that’s pretty much a straight-up video of the stage show. But that’s the exception, not the rule.) Musicals, like Rock of Ages, especially tend to have extra punch when you get to see them on stage.
