Brutal Legend comes out today

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Just a reminder: Brutal Legend comes out today, for those of us who weren’t at Gamestop at midnight.

(No, yours truly was not among them. One, I needed sleep last night. Two, I don’t have $60 to drop on a game at the moment. Household repairs have a way of derailing the ‘entertainment’ section of the budget. I will start posting more about my experiences with the game when I can afford to get it.)

Tom Petty Tracks for Rock Band

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

According to the Examiner.com, two tracks from Tom Petty were added to the Rock Band store yesterday. (My Xbox still isn’t talking to Xbox Live though, so I won’t be getting them today at least. I’m pretty sure it’s the router that’s the problem.)

In terms of the challenge of playing these songs, they probably made solid choices. Both “I Won’t Back Down” and “Runnin’ Down a Dream” have decent guitar parts. “Runnin’ Down a Dream” has a drum track that I know I won’t be able to follow, and the guitar work in the solo is pretty impressive. “I Won’t Back Down” will probably be more of a fun party track.

Unfortunately, I would have preferred different tracks–personally, I think singing “Free Fallin’” and “Refugee: would rule. Unfortunately neither is actually a very complicated song, so no matter how much I would enjoy singing them, I don’t think they’re going to make either available as a download.

I’ll post again with my review of the tracks–when I can get them to download.

Brutal Legend Demo Coming Soon

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Gamespy reports that there is a Brutal Legend demo coming in September.

I can’t wait for this. One, this is going to be the first time that I’ll actually be able to get my hands on a playable version of the game in any way, shape or form.  Two, having a demo is going to let me decide whether to ask for a preorder on this for my birthday or whether I should buy it for myself.

(Plus, if I ask for it for my birthday, the telemarketing calls from Gamestop will go to my folks’ number and not mine, and after years of my brother’s gaming habits, they already get them.  I don’t need a computer calling me up to tell me about the midnight party for the release of the next expansion pack for World of Warcraft.)

Also, check out the screenshots posted over at Gamespy.  They’ve got some new ones that I missed while I was distracted by work and the new Bon Jovi release.  There’s one really cool one that shows Eddie with demon arms playing the guitar.  There’s also a good shot of Doviculus–the guy looks like he’s about ten feet tall.  That’s something that seems to be missed in a lot of games; the scale often seems out of whack, or isn’t used properly.   Big villains should be just that–big. Ocarina of Time got it right at the end when Ganon rises up out of the rubble and you realize that taking down Ganondorf was just the warm up act and this round was going to hurt.   Doviculus looks like he’s got a little bit of that going on.  He looks like he’s just big enough to be ominous.  Every other video that I’ve seen of the game looks like it was properly designed, so I have no doubts that scale will be used properly here too.

Now I just need to figure out why my Xbox stopped communicating with Xbox Live so I can actually download the demo and play it.  Looks like I should get started–I only have a few days left before the beginning of September to get it working.

Brutal Legend sponsoring Dethklok and Mastodon Tour

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Brutal Legend will be sponsoring Dethklok and Mastodon’s upcoming tour, according to WorthPlaying.

They even plan on having game stations at the concerts so that the fans can try out the game right at the show. In some ways, this may not help expand the reach of the game very much. Most of the metal fans (at least the ones I know) usually tend to be gamers already. They’re all stoked for the release of Brutal Legend already.

However, the deal does come with advertising spots on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, thanks to the Dethklok/Metalocalypse connection. Adult Swim reaches a large audience of gamers, some of whom might not have been introduced to Brutal Legend otherwise. If they at least check it out, they might find out (like those of us who have been watching the trailers and demos) that there is more to this game than metal, and that will help the game do well.

I haven’t heard anything to indicate this, but maybe this partnership will mean that some Dethklok content will make it into Brutal Legend. It would be awesome if they gave out codes for an in-game Dethklok goodie at the concerts, kind of like the Tenacious D guitar that you get for pre-ordering.

Bon Jovi DLC for Rock Band

Monday, June 29th, 2009

There’s a discussion of requested Bon Jovi downloadable content at the Rock Band forums. There just aren’t enough Jovi songs available for Rock Band as it stands. Wanted Dead or Alive and Livin’ on a Prayer just don’t cut it anymore. A lot of the requested ones are pretty good; I might actually get around to getting a hard drive for my Xbox 360 if they start adding those.

Yes, I do only have an Xbox 360 Arcade. In retrospect, buying it was a mistake; I should have just gotten the regular one. Not having a hard drive does kind of put a heavy limit on what you can do with it. (I can’t even connect it to Xbox Live; I don’t have enough room on my memory card for the NXE.)

There are a few hardcore fans on there picking on the people who are requesting Blaze of Glory as part of a Bon Jovi pack. (Granted, it’s mild picking, but still.) Personally I always cut people some slack for thinking Blaze is a Bon Jovi song; even though it was originally a Jon solo song, it’s basically been adopted by the band. Soundwise, it would have fit in fine on Slippery When Wet or New Jersey, and it was included in with the rest of the band’s hits on Cross Road–which really makes it appear to be a band release to someone who’s not a hardcore fan. Plus, the band plays it in concert a lot.

On the other hand, there are a few people asking for Dry County for Rock Band. My arm hurts just thinking about it. (I guess I have a real fondness for epic guitar work; almost all of my big favorite songs always leave me with a sore arm when I play them in Guitar Hero or Rock Band.)

My personal Bon Jovi / Jon Bon Jovi / Richie Sambora Rock Band wish list:
Bad Medicine
Bed of Roses
Blaze of Glory
It’s My Life
You Give Love a Bad Name
This Ain’t a Love Song

I’d like to see the following songs, but I know that it’s never going to happen:
Living in Sin
Rosie

Both are too obscure, and also far too lyrically questionable for a game that’s rated Teen. (Let’s face it, the original Living in Sin video was banned from MTV, and still has the power to offend.)

Also, I’m totally behind all the people wondering why Slippery When Wet hasn’t been made available as a complete album. Not only is it the album that made the band, in many ways, SWW is the definitive hair metal album.

I think I’ll go over to bonjovi.com and bug Obie about it. Evidently bugging Harmonix about it isn’t doing any good.

Brutal Legend Box Art

Friday, June 26th, 2009

(Or is it cover art?)

Destructoid has previews of the box art for Brutal Legend.

Like the commenters at Destructoid, I do find it interesting that Tim Schafer’s name is the only name on the box with the laundry list of heavy metal celebrities in the game, plus Jack Black in the lead. The absence of Jack Black’s name is especially odd; the guy has built a very successful career and the marketing materials that have been released for the game thus far have made fairly heavy use of it–especially the ‘Brutal Thoughts’ clips that they have been releasing.

Perhaps the list of heavy hitters was so long they wouldn’t fit on a standard game disc box at any kind of reasonable font size for marketing purposes. (Judging by the cast list that I’ve seen so far, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the case.)

Even without leveraging the game’s star power, the box art does a more than adequate job of selling the contents inside. Heck, if I saw that at the local Gamestop, I’d be zeroing in on it in a heartbeat even if I knew nothing whatsoever about the game. Guitars, amps, and some seriously metal weaponry. Also, between Eddie’s bloody axe and the assorted other weaponry on the cover, it’s amply clear that this is more than just a heavy metal Guitar Hero clone.

Van Halen Edition of Guitar Hero Leaves Out Members

Friday, June 12th, 2009

There’s an article up at G4 that states that the Guitar Hero Van Halen game will not be including all of the band members.

I kind of figured this for a given.  With the contentious history of Van Halen, anything that features the band is only going to show the current lineup.  It would have been far too big of a hassle to try to get everyone into the game.  Ultimately, this was probably the better lineup to have around when trying to release this kind of game; at least they have David Lee Roth, so his fan base is a secure market. Imagine if they’d released it with only Gary Cherone.  They’d have annoyed every hardcore VH fan out there.

Still not buying it though.  I agree with the commenters over at G4–haven’t these people ever heard of downloadable content?

Bon Jovi announced for Guitar Hero 5

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Rolling Stone has a preview announcement of ten of the bands to appear in the next Guitar Hero game, including Bon Jovi (and a few I thought were already in another Guitar Hero game).

Guitar Hero 4 (World Tour) included the first Bon Jovi song to appear in the GH franchise–Wanted Dead or Alive. However, that game was Activision’s attempt to catch up after Harmonix put out the first Rock Band and took the whole concept to the next level. And the first Rock Band game had Wanted in it. That song made it in just because they were bent on copying everything that Harmonix did in Rock Band.

So my bet is that the Bon Jovi song in Guitar Hero 5 will be Livin’ On A Prayer–just like Rock Band 2.

All that being said, I am still thinking about getting this one (I skipped the Metallica edition). After all, I originally bought my Xbox 360 just to play Guitar Hero 3.

E3 Is Here!

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

E3 started yesterday and has brought with it a whole lot of news….

You can check out the Brutal Legend press conference from E3 over at GameTrailers. It’s got a brand new trailer for the game in it, along with a new “Brutal Thoughts” clip. This is the first trailer to actually show Lionwhyte. He looks pretty cool and the scream is impressive, but Halford’s British accent doesn’t quite fit with the look. He does have some good lines though. Actually, it sounds like everybody does. The more trailers we get, the more the humor element of the game comes through, and it’s well done. And by the way, Keeper of the Sacred Beer Tree is pretty much everyone’s dream job. (At least for the people who will play this.)

Oddly enough, I haven’t seen any sign of Dio yet, although I had heard that he was going to be in Brutal Legend. I had thought that he was going to be the bass-playing mystic, but it looks like that’s going to be Lemmy’s character. It’s possible that I got my information on that from a bad source. However, the video does show a lot of the other characters from the game, including Halford’s other character. This was also the first time that I’d seen Lita Ford’s character, and the Ozzy announcement was new, even though I can’t say it’s a surprise. They’ve done such a good job getting talent for Brutal Legend that I’m not surprised by anyone showing up anymore. And at that rate, how could they have a metal game and leave Ozzy out?

I just hope that they didn’t cut Dio to appease Ozzy. I realize that the whole Heaven and Hell thing is causing some trouble between those two right now, but it’s not like they had to be in the studio together.

Unfortunately, it has also brought us the announcement of the Beatles edition of Rock Band. Now, if you read my earlier post about the Guitar Hero band games, you’ll have an idea of how thrilled I am about that. Honestly, I though Harmonix was better than that and wouldn’t follow Activision’s lead on this one, but I guess I was wrong. These band-based games just end up being monotonous. It would make much more sense to sell themed track packs–call them mega-packs or some other fancy name if they still need to make a big deal out of releasing a whole pile of tracks from one band–but integrate them with the existing games. That way, playing through a career for awhile doesn’t get so monotonous.

I realize that the band games do include different venues–and that’s fine, but how much value do the venues really add to the game? Once you’ve gotten to Hard or Expert it’s not like you can really pay attention to anything but the track anyway. And even at that, that’s solvable too. I’m sure that it must be possible to add downloadable venues to the games. Throw those in with the track pack and then it can be a sub-game. They could even give it its own achievements, like other expansion packs have on the 360. They can make just as much money, if not more, off downloadable content. I might have bought the Beatles tracks as downloads for Rock Band 2. I won’t be buying them as a separate game.

About that cutscene…

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

About that cutscene on Spike… I meant to watch it. I just crashed out on the couch and fell asleep before 11. Pathetic, but it was a long day at work–even with the shorter drive now that I’ve moved. I wish I’d seen it. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find it on YouTube or anywhere else. The only things that come up for Brutal Legend on Spike are the trailers from the VGAs. While those do rule, they aren’t exactly new.

(I think I’ve seen those about fifty times now. I can’t stop watching them. But I want to see Lionwhyte in full video. That will be too cool.)

I’m sure that there’s going to be new goodies coming out of E3 though, and when those come around, I’ll be on it. Hopefully those will make up for missing this.

(Update: Scratch that, I think I’ve found it at Kotaku.)

It looks like it’s Eddie’s introduction to the Halfords–basically a chunk of the standard intro cutscene that sets up the plot of the game. I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a game that didn’t come with one of those. Closest might be Oblivion, where the exposition was worked into the tutorial level dialog instead of being a straight-up intro cutscene, and this looks like it might be sort of like that, because it has to have come after the first tutorial fights when Eddie first wakes up.
